The Denver Post prep staff looks at Saturday’s action in high school sports:

FOOTBALL

Huskies rush Sun Devils

Dillon Whisman and A.J. Melillo rushed Platte Canyon past Kent Denver on Saturday.

In a battle of undefeated teams in Bailey in the Class 2A Colorado League, Whisman and Melillo combined for 396 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Huskies beat visiting Kent Denver 27-13.

Platte Canyon improved to 7-0 overall, 4-0 league. The Sun Devils are 6-1, 3-1.

Whisman ran 24 times for 215 yards and scored on a 26-yarder in the first quarter. Melillo, also a track champion, went for 181 yards on 19 carries and scored on runs of 36 and 4 yards.

Tyler Jackson ran for 94 yards and scored a touchdown for Kent Denver.

SOFTBALL

Diamond doings

Opening rounds of postseason play were greeted by cold, wet, miserable conditions at multiple sites.

Most regional play was able to be completed, but there will be a handful of games today and Monday.

In 5A, defending state champion Legacy rolled. The Lightning drubbed Palmer 12-1 and Loveland 10-0 to cruise into this week’s state action.

Other regulars advanced, such as Rocky Mountain, Arvada West, Columbine, Mountain Vista, Bear Creek, Brighton and two 5A newcomers, Ralston Valley and Cherokee Trail.

Fort Collins-Pomona will play today; Loveland-Palmer and Fort Collins-Pomona will be Monday.

In 4A, former 5A power Wheat Ridge easily advanced as the top seed. The Farmers whipped John F. Kennedy 20-0 and Pueblo Central 13-3.

Elsewhere, advancers included Pueblo Central, which rebounded to qualify by downing Broomfield 10-6, Castle View, Delta, D’Evelyn, Windsor, Conifer, Lewis-Palmer, Widefield, Falcon, Mullen, Mountain View, Northridge and Frederick advanced.

Pueblo South-Sand Creek will meet today and Pueblo Centennial- Cheyenne Mountain on Monday.

The Colorado High School Activities Association on Tuesday will confirm pairings and times for next weekend’s final rounds at the Aurora Sports Complex.

On Thursday, 3A will have its play-in games; 5A-4A teams will have to win two games to advance on Friday; and Saturday will have three sets of semifinals and title games.

CROSS COUNTRY

Renaissance run

The Regis boys and Highlands Ranch girls went 1-2 in their respective races to take top individual and team honors in the Continental League’s Renaissance meet in Larkspur.

In boys, Regis’ Bobby and Danny Nicholls led the way. Bobby won in 16 minutes, 1.3 seconds over the 5K (3.1 mile) course. Danny was second in 16:31.5. The Raiders boys edged Chaparral 48-62 to win the meet.

In girls, Eleanor Fulton (18:47.6) and Kirsten Kientz (19:11.5) paced the Falcons to a 53-82 edge over ThunderRidge.
