HONOLULU—Autopsies are planned Tuesday on the bodies of two sisters-in-law killed when waves struck them and pulled them out to sea.
Kauai authorities say 38-year-old Tonya Cataldo of Parker, Colo., and 33-year-old Heather Westphal of Washington, D.C., were strolling along Queen’s Bath in Princeville when a large wave knocked Westphal off her feet.
Cataldo tried to help her, but a second large wave swept both women into the water. Lifeguards stationed about three-quarters of a mile away arrived soon after, but they and firefighters were unable to resuscitate the women.
In a separate, earlier incident Sunday, a 74-year-old man apparently drowned while snorkeling. Cataldo was an administrator in the Douglas County School District. She’s survived by her husband and two children.
