Northern Colorado sophomore safety Max Hewitt was named the Big Sky Conference co-defensive player of the week Monday after the Bears beat Idaho State 29-9 on Saturday, their first victory this season.
Hewitt, a former standout at Grandview High School in Aurora, had two interceptions — one at the Bears’ 1-yard line — and five tackles.
Hewitt shared the award with Northern Arizona defensive lineman Kyle Rath. Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins was the offensive player of the week. Northern Arizona kicker-punter Robbie Dehaze won the special teams award, his fourth this season.
Rams’ Smith on MWC anniversary team.
Former Colorado State standout Jason Smith, along with Wyoming’s Josh Davis and Marcus Bailey, were voted to the Mountain West Conference’s 10th anniversary men’s basketball team, chosen by a panel of media, schools, the conference and an online poll.
Smith (2004-07), Davis (1999-2002) and Bailey (1999-2003) are joined by BYU senior Lee Cummard, New Mexico’s Ruben Douglas (2000-03) and Danny Granger (2003-05), San Diego State’s Brandon Heath (2003-07), UNLV senior Wink Adams and Rebels senior Marcus Banks, and Utah’s Andrew Bogut (2003-05).
Air Force’s Olson wins hockey award.
After Air Force’s two-game sweep of Sacred Heart in a weekend Atlantic Hockey Association series, Falcons senior Brent Olson was named the league’s player of the week. The forward compiled five points with one goal and four assists against Sacred Heart.
CSU volleyball steady at No. 13.
The Colorado State volleyball team (16-1, 6-0 Mountain West) compiled a 3-0 record last week but remained at No. 13 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. The Rams have won 13 consecutive matches and helped coach Tom Hilbert earn his school-record 300th career victory Sunday with a victory over New Mexico.
Gilles, Donohue win silver.
Piper Gilles of Colorado Springs won a silver medal in pairs ice dancing at the International Skating Union Junior Grand Prix in Cape Town, South Africa. Gilles’ partner on the Broadmoor Skating Club is Zach Donohue of Madison, Conn. The pair won gold in their first event together in September at the JPG Czech Republic event.
