The Broomfield City Council must reconsider the city’s nuisance-property ordinance after opponents last week submitted enough valid signatures on a petition for its repeal.
Citizens for Fair Ordinances submitted 975 valid signatures, said Russ Ragsdale, Broomfield’s city and county clerk. For a repeal, 918 valid signatures were needed.
The City Council must decide whether it should repeal the ordinance or put the issue up for a public vote, Ragsdale said.
The ordinance allows penalties for property owners who let their homes or yards fall into disrepair — such as peeling paint, damaged roofs and missing fencing. Owners not in compliance are ticketed and given 30 days to remedy the violation or they can be taken to court and fined.
