INDIANAPOLIS — One surgery wasn’t enough to fix Peyton Manning’s left knee. Colts coach Tony Dungy confirmed Monday, after nearly two months of deflecting questions, Manning was operated on a second time before returning to the field in August.
Dungy doesn’t believe the second operation — to fix an infected bursa sac — was the reason the team had a sluggish start this season.
“I don’t think it set him back, it was part of the rehab process,” Dungy said.
Manning was not available in the locker room Monday.
Dallas punter breaks foot
IRVING, Texas — The Cowboys lost Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo for about a month, but they could lose Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar for the season.
McBriar suffered a main fracture and two hairline fractures in his right foot when his punt was blocked in overtime in the Cowboys’ loss to Arizona.
The Cowboys are interested in veteran Josh Miller as a replacement.
• Wide receiver Sam Hurd is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair ligaments in his left ankle today. He could miss six to eight weeks.
Footnotes.
Seattle will be without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for at least one more game because a months-old bulging disc in his back is causing problems with his knee. Coach Mike Holmgren said his three-time Pro Bowl passer will not play Sunday when the Seahawks (1-4) are at Tampa Bay (4-2). If backup Seneca Wallace can practice this week after missing last week with a calf injury, he will start. If not, No. 3 quarterback Charlie Frye will make his second consecutive start.
• Cincinnati QB Carson Palmer will miss at least one more game because of a sore passing elbow. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who lead the AFC North at 4-1 and are coming off a bye.
• Bills QB Trent Edwards was back at work a week after being knocked out in Buffalo’s Week 5 loss to Arizona and said he expects to play Sunday when the Bills (4-1) host San Diego (3-3).
• The Redskins are fed up with rookie punter Durant Brooks’ inconsistency and will be auditioning replacements today. Brooks has a nagging hip flexor and quadriceps strain in his kicking leg.
• The Buccaneers’ Byron Storer tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee covering a kickoff return during Sunday’s 27-3 victory over the Carolina Panthers and will have season-ending surgery. The ACL tear leaves the Bucs (4-2) without a healthy fullback.
• Niners fullback Zak Keasey is out for the season after tearing the biceps tendon in his right arm during the 49ers’ loss to Philadelphia. He will be placed on injured reserve.
• Detroit placed safety Gerald Alexander on injured reserve with a neck injury.
• Packers cornerback Al Harris’ spleen injury showed “significant improvement” in medical tests, and he could return later this month, coach Mike McCarthy said.
• Several teams are thought to be interested in the nine-time Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez, including the Bills, Eagles and Giants. The trade deadline is 2 p.m. MDT today.
• Chicago Bears offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf was suspended for four games for violating the league’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. He is eligible to return to the active roster on Nov. 17.
