Liberian cocoa farmers in the northern province of Nimba County say low domestic prices are forcing them to smuggle their produce into neighboring Ivory Coast.
Farmers who sell cocoa to agents in Liberia are being offered between 45 cents and $1 a kilogram, compared with $1.50 to $1.60 across the border in Ivory Coast, Saye Mlehn, a cocoa farmer in Saclepea, said Sunday.
The cross-border smuggling is hurting attempts to regenerate Liberia’s agricultural industry.
