Somewhere along the way, it seems that we all lost our collective minds and started paying for bread crumbs. Honestly. Most of us have more bread in the house than sandwiches planned, and yet we still throw down several dollars for a too-big tub of bread crumbs whenever we try to cut costs by making meatloaf.
Put those heels of bread to good use, and save yourself a fistful of dollars in the process.
Bread crumbs
Ingredients
As much bread as you have lying around, crusts removed
Directions
Pull bread into chunks and let sit out overnight. Place bread cubes into food processor and let it rip until the bread crumbs reach the desired consistency.
If you’re going to be sprinkling your bread crumbs over pasta (a wonderful idea), toast them first. Here’s how: Preheat oven to 375. Toss 1 cup bread crumbs with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt, then spread onto a baking sheet. Bake until golden brown, about 12 minutes, stirring halfway through.
