LINCOLN, Neb.—Jaivorio (juh-VAR-ee-oh) Burkes will start in place of Mike Smith at left tackle when Nebraska plays at Iowa State this week.
Coach Bo Pelini said Burkes earned the promotion after outplaying Smith in the Texas Tech game. Smith was called for consecutive holding penalties, though guard Mike Huff appeared to be the guilty party on one of them.
Burkes started three games as a freshman last season and one this year in place of an injured Lydon Murtha.
