Ben Kweller likes ’em young. Or maybe they like him young. Either way. Photos and text by .
Reverb regular Julio Enriquez checks in with this mini-review and a few photos from the Oct. 10 Ben Kweller show at the Bluebird Theater:
The Texas troubador (no, not Willie Nelson) made a stop in Denver on Friday in support of his new EP, “How Ya Lookin’ Southbound? Come In…” The tour’s a no-brainer: His music also appears in the new movie soundtrack from Chuck Palahniuk’s book, “Choke.”
The ex-Radish frontman ditched his guitar for a large portion of his show and tickled the ivories a la Piano Man Elton John. The boot totin’ Kweller serenaded a visibly young crowd that seemed to get a hall pass for a Friday night show, playing a chunk of new material.
In most situations I would be anti-piano, but for Kweller, it suited him just fine. The crazy thing is that (and I’m showing my age here) I remember catching Kweller years ago at the same venue, but he had a crazy Southern rock band opening up for him (My Morning Jacket — you may have heard of them).
Time has passed and Kweller hasn’t forsaken his target audience.
