HOLLYWOOD — The Screen Actors Guild board of directors on Sunday rejected calls to seek an immediate strike authorization from members and instead called for bringing in a federal mediator to resolve the logjam in contract talks with studios.
The board voted overwhelmingly in favor of the move, which also preserved the right of the union’s negotiating committee to seek a strike-authorization vote from members should the mediation efforts fail.
The move was something of a compromise between guild hard-liners who were pressing for the strike authorization and newly elected moderates from Hollywood who have criticized the union leadership’s handling of the negotiations. Actors have been working without a contract since June 30.
