CARSON, Calif.—Conor Casey scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute to give the Colorado Rapids a 2-1 victory over Chivas USA today.
Colin Clark also scored for the Rapids (11-14-4), who broke a two-game losing streak and moved within two points of the eighth and final playoff spot with one game remaining. Kansas City, New York, and Real Salt Lake are all tied ahead of Colorado.
Jonathan Bornstein scored for Chivas USA (12-11-6), which saw its four-game winning streak ended.
Casey scored his 10th goal of the season after Chivas USA’s Shavar Thomas fouled Omar Cummings in the penalty area. Casey’s penalty kick hit inside the base of the right post and ricocheted behind goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.
Kennedy kept Colorado from moving ahead when he stopped Tom McManus’s penalty kick in the 57th minute. But Clark’s 7-yard header off Cummings’ crossing pass from the right wing gave the Rapids a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.
Bornstein tied the score in the 72nd minute by converting Dejair’s pass that ricocheted off a defender into a left-footed shot from 11 yards.
