LAS VEGAS — Marc Turnesa completed a wire-to-wire victory for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 68 on Sunday to hold off Matt Kuchar by a stroke in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

The fourth rookie to win on the PGA Tour this season, Turnesa finished with a 24-under 263 total.

Kuchar finished with a 64 while former UNLV star Chad Campbell shot a 67 to tie for third at 22-under with John Mallinger (68) and Michael Allen (70).

• Morgan Pressel birdied the final hole in the inaugural Kapalua LPGA Classic in Maui, Hawaii, for her first victory of the season.

Pressel closed with a 3-under 69 to edge Suzann Pettersen (69) by a stroke. Pressel finished at 8-under 280.

• Bernhard Langer won his second straight Administaff Small Business Classic title, shooting a 3-under 69 to finish a 12-under in The Woodlands, Texas.

Lonnie Nielsen (71) finished two strokes back while Fred Funk closed with a 69 to finish third, three back.

• Alvaro Quiros held off a chasing pack that included Order of Merit leader Robert Karlsson to win the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura by three shots.

The Spaniard shot a 4-under 68 for a 19-under 269 total. Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie (67) was second.

Venus wins in straight sets

ZURICH, Switzerland — Venus Williams won the Zurich Open for her second singles title of the year.

Williams beat Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (1), 6-2 to win the event she last won as a teenager in 1999.

• Andy Murray beat Gilles Simon of France 6-4, 7-6 (6) to win the Madrid Masters in Spain.

The U.S. Open finalist will become the first Briton in the Open era since Fred Perry in 1936 to finish the year fourth in the rankings.

Asheville big man sidelined

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — UNC Asheville’s Kenny George, at 7-foot-7 the nation’s tallest college basketball player and the Big South Conference’s defensive player of the year last season, will not play this year amid reports part of his right foot was amputated.

George needed surgery after contracting a staph infection, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported. said the 22-year-old had surgery three weeks ago and is expected to remain in an Iowa hospital for at least another month.

Hamilton closes in on F1 title

SHANGHAI, China — Lewis Hamilton’s victory in the Chinese Grand Prix proved to be anticlimactic, leaving the McLaren driver just short of clinching the 2008 Formula One title.

Hamilton led from start to finish, finishing 14.9 seconds ahead of rival Felipe Massa. He extended his lead in the drivers’ championship to seven points with only the Brazilian Grand Prix remaining in two weeks.
