Cooler weather and clouds today signal a change in the weather that could mean heavy winds, and even snow by Wednesday.

As cold fronts begin passing through Colorado, tonight’s low should be around 42 degrees, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday, the chance of showers and thunderstorms will increase in the afternoon.

Strong and gusty winds from the northwest could kick as high as 60 mph later in the day, especially east of I-25. The weather service has issued a high wind watch for Tuesday afternoon through late Tuesday night.

The strongest winds are expected east of a line between Fort Collins to near Bennett.

On Wednesday, with a high near 48, a 10 percent chance of snow is shaping up for Denver. Rain will change to snow in the higher country, and the weather service reports a threat of accumulating snow on the eastern plains, mainly on a line from Sterling to Akron through Wednesday night.

Exactly how much snow will depend on the tracking of a strong storm system developing over the central plains. The weather service advises residents and ranchers on the far eastern plains to prepare for harsh winter conditions from Tuesday night into Wednesday night.

By Thursday, sunnier skies should return, with a high around 53, warming up to the high 60s for Friday and the weekend.
