A woman was jaywalking across East Hampden Avenue over the weekend when a car slammed into her and threw her several feet to her death, authorities say.

The pedestrian had stepped from the median and was crossing about 50 feet from the intersection of Hampden and South Forrest Street at 6:45 p.m. Sunday when she was hit by the car, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Swedish Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, Jackson said.

Bob Bando, 63, of Lakewood was driving west on East Hampden when he saw the woman attempting to beat the traffic coming from the east, he said. She was wearing a dress and had a coat with a hood over her head, he said.

“I knew she was in trouble,” Bando recalled.

Bando stopped so he could tell police what he saw, he said. The driver of the car that struck the woman also stayed at the scene, he said.

Jackson said it does not appear that the driver, whose name has not been released, violated any traffic laws before the accident.
