BOULDER, Colo.—An Aurora man found dead amid the Flatirons rock formations west of Boulder died of a head injury.

The Boulder County coroner’s office says 47-year-old Edward J. Thompson was the man whose body was found about 4 p.m. Saturday in a gully between two of the towering Flatirons.

The area is popular with climbers and hikers.

An autopsy showed Thompson died of head trauma. Officials say the death appeared to be an accident and that there was no indication of foul play.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sue Cullen has said no climbing gear was found with the body but investigators hadn’t ruled out the possibility that Thompson had been climbing.

Boulder County sheriff’s deputies are investigating.
