Fire departments in northern Colorado agreed Tuesday to resume work at the Poudre Fire Authority training academy after confirming there were no new cases of a drug-resistant staph infection called MRSA.

The recruiting academy at the facility was closed Monday because of the MRSA outbreak, which infected at least five firefighters over the past three weeks.

But after hearing from officials with the Colorado department of health, the Front Range Fire Consortium decided to resume training Monday, said Poudre Fire Authority spokesman Patrick Love.

State health officials said they were unable to determine a point of origin for the outbreak inside the facility. Investigators believe that the MRSA may have been brought in with some personal items.
