A Boulder man who vanished more than two weeks ago was found last night carrying a loaded handgun and a bottle of wine after knocking on a door for help.
James “Jim” McPhee, 34, who was reported missing on Oct. 5 by his wife, knocked on a door in the 800 block of Seventh Street at about 9:40 p.m., Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said.
McPhee asked for help, and the resident was able to disarm him without incident, Huntley said.
The resident called police, who arrived to find McPhee “disoriented” and lying on the ground.
McPhee was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, where he remained under medical care this morning.
This afternoon, police said McPhee had no physical injuries.
He told them he doesn’t remember anything after 4 p.m. Oct. 5. He told investigators he doesn’t know where he has been, where his car is or how he came to have the gun and the wine.
McPhee disappeared on Oct. 5 after leaving his mother-in-law’s house to drop off DVDs at the Boulder Public Library on his way home.
McPhee told his wife he was going to stop off at the library at 1000 Canyon Blvd. to drop off the DVDs. Investigators confirmed the DVDs were indeed returned to the library.
His wife reported him missing after he failed to arrive home. The couple have two young children.
McPhee, a bus driver for the Boulder Valley School District, was driving a black 1998 Chrysler Town and Country minivan with Colorado plates 523NZX when he went missing. The minivan has not been found, and police continue to investigate the incident.
