Winter weather blasted into the mountains overnight, slowing traffic on highways and passes, but most roads in the metro are dry for the morning commute.
In the mountains, the I-70 corridor got hit with snow and winds through the night and Vail Pass, Loveland Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel approaches remain wet, snowy and icy in spots, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Chain laws for commercial trucks remain in affect this morning for many mountain passes in Colorado’s high country, including Loveland and Hoosier passes.
The only two ski mountains opened for the season so far — Arapahoe Basin and the Loveland Ski Area — both got snow over the last 24 hours, according to Colorado Ski Country USA. A-Basin received 4 inches in the past 24 hours and Loveland 8 inches of new snow.
Denver has a slight chance – 10 percent – of lingering snow this morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Denver’s high temperature today should be about 46 degrees with winds gusting up to 41 mph, the weather service reports.
In Vail today scattered snow showers are expected before noon. The chance for precipitation this morning in Vail is 30 percent and the high temperature should reach 41 degrees, the weather service said.
High winds are expected to blow today along the Front Range and on the Eastern Plains through 6 p.m., with gusts up to 60 mph in northeastern Colorado.
A freeze warning will be in affect overnight into Thursday morning for most of the state including the Denver area.
