COLUMBIA, Mo.—Missouri’s Chase Coffman is one of the nation’s most productive tight ends, but he broke a record Saturday that makes him one of the most prolific in history.

Coffman set a record for career receptions by a Division I tight end against Colorado in a 58-0 Missouri win over Colorado.

“It’s pretty neat to be able to go out there and do that,” Coffman said. “I’ve had a great team around me to open things up just so I can make those plays.”

He entered the game five catches short of the record. He finished with seven receptions for 50 yards, including a one-handed grab in the back of the end zone for a 3-yard jumping touchdown pass from Chase Daniel.

“It sounds like Superman,” coach Gary Pinkel said. “I’m just telling you, that guy is unbelievable. What a remarkable play.”

A 4-yard reception broke the mark of 217 receptions by Ibn Green of Louisville from 1996-99.

“It’s awesome,” Daniel said. “I’m glad I’m the quarterback who got to throw to him. He’s going to crush that record, I’ll guarantee you that.”

Coffman has been one of few bright spots in two straight disheartening losses for Missouri. In the last three games, the senior has 30 receptions for 293 yards and two touchdowns. Coffman broke the record in his worst statistical game, failing to catch 10 passes and go over 100 yards for the first time in three weeks.

Coffman entered the game with 56 catches, second in the nation among tight ends, with a 12.4-yard average and four touchdowns. The touchdown catch was the 25th of his career, extending his school career record.

He also holds the school record for career receptions and is second in receiving yards with 2,416.

In three full seasons, Coffman has averaged 52 catches and 557 yards a season despite sharing time with Martin Rucker, who is now with the Cleveland Browns. Now the full time starter, the 6’6, 245-pounder has already established a career high in receptions with 63 and yards with 744.

And having a record in victory makes him savor the accomplishment even more.

“It’s great to able to have that kind of a game with a win,” Coffman said. “I’m glad I can enjoy it with everybody on my team.”
