SAINTS’ MCALLISTER AWARE OF PROBE BEFORE REPORT

WEMBLEY, England — Deuce McAllister knew coming to London that he was being investigated for violating the NFL’s steroid policy, but insisted Sunday he had done “everything that we were asked to do” to follow the league’s drug policy.

McAllister and New Orleans Saints teammate Will Smith reportedly are among several players who tested positive for a weight-loss diuretic that can be used as a masking agent for steroids.

Saints coach Sean Payton refused to comment on the reports after New Orleans beat the San Diego Chargers 37-32 at Wembley Stadium.

McAllister stopped short of saying he tested positive, but said he had known about the investigation since before it was first reported by Fox 31 television in Denver on Friday.

“We’ve been kind of going through this process for a while,” said McAllister, who ran for 55 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers. “I guess you guys just found out about it at this point. But whatever happens, that’s what’s going to happen.”

Winslow defends his actions

CLEVELAND — Browns tight end Kellen Winslow said he thought he was doing the right thing when he spoke publicly about his staph infection and said the team has a problem with the infections.

The Pro Bowler, who was suspended this past week after he made critical comments about the Browns’ handling of his hospitalization, said he didn’t mean to disrupt the team, but to highlight the medical issues it has.

Injury report.

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten left Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers because of a rib injury.

When Witten was hurt at the end of the first quarter, it was announced that he had bruised ribs. But the four-time Pro Bowler said after the game that he planned to get some tests to “find out what it is. I don’t know.”

• Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu left the Seahawks’ win over the 49ers in the first half with a groin injury and did not return.

• Eagles tight end L.J. Smith was knocked out of a win over the Falcons with a concussion after a late hit from Lawyer Milloy.
