SURFERS PARADISE, Australia — Ryan Briscoe won the Indy 300 on Sunday, taking the lead when fellow Australian Will Power crashed out on the 17th lap.
Team Penske’s Briscoe became the first Australian driver to win the 60-lap race on the 2.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit. He beat Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon of New Zealand by 0.5019 seconds.
American Ryan Hunter-Reay was third and Alex Tagliani was fourth, followed by Oriol Servia.
Federer wins Swiss Indoors
BASEL, Switzerland — Roger Federer won his hometown tournament for the third straight year, beating David Nalbandian 6-3, 6-4 in the Swiss Indoors final.
• Andy Murray won the St. Petersburg Open in Russia for the second straight year by beating qualifier Andrey Golubev 6-1, 6-1.
• Robin Soderling earned his third career title with a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1 victory over Julien Benneteau at the Lyon Grand Prix in France.
• Ana Ivanovic beat Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-1 in the final of the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria.

Ligety third in Cup giant slalom
SOELDEN, Austria — Daniel Al- brecht and Didier Cuche gave Switzerland a 1-2 finish in the men’s season-opening World Cup giant slalom.
Defending giant slalom champion Ted Ligety of the U.S. was third, with teammate and defending overall World Cup champion Bode Miller in 10th.
Albrecht, who led after the first leg, finished in a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 15.78 seconds to beat Cuche by 0.14 seconds.
Hedrick defeats Davis
WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Chad Hedrick edged rival Shani Davis in a 5,000-meter speedskating race in which both Olympic medalists shattered the Pettit National Ice Center record for the distance.
Nancy Swider-Peltz Jr. won the women’s 3,000 in the other race on final day of competition to select the U.S. World Cup teams.
Donovan secures scoring title
CARSON, Calif. — Landon Donovan won the MLS scoring title, scoring on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-2 tie with FC Dallas.
The goal was Donovan’s career- high 20th of the season. FC Dallas’ Kenny Cooper finished second with 18.
• Brad Evans scored the only goal and the Columbus Crew denied D.C. United a playoff berth with a 1-0 victory.
Duke makes PBA history
WICHITA — Norm Duke became the first player in PBA history to win three consecutive majors with a victory in the PBA World Championship.
Duke beat Chris Barnes in the final, 259-189.
