DEMING, N.M. — Maybe it’s the patience a golfer learns trying to master the game and a course that serves the judge well as he sits at the bench.
Or maybe it’s the patience the judge learns hearing a variety of cases in his courtroom that teaches him the patience that benefits his golf game.
“I don’t know,” said Gary Jeffreys.
The record shows the 6th Judicial District Court Judge has the patience for each endeavor.
“I actually tell myself,” Jeffreys said, “golf is supposed to be fun, you’re out there to have fun. If you can’t enjoy it, don’t play.”
Evidence indicates enjoyment. Jeffreys has won the Rio Mimbres Country Club invitational tournament five times.
Last month, he won the New Mexico-West Texas Sun Country Mid-Amateur at Rio Rancho’s Desert Greens course. He shot 72-76-72-220 on the par-72 course.
Jeffreys earned his law degree from The University of New Mexico Law School. Weekends, and occasionally after work, you’ll find him on the course, honing his game.
He plays a Titleist ball with Ping clubs.
His Honor carries a zero handicap.
If you’re in a foursome with Jeffreys, you’ll know if you’ve picked up his golf ball. It has a smile drawn in one of the dimples, his personal trademark, a reminder golf is fun.
