BOULDER, Colo.—They have names like “Rita” and “Hugo,” and they spin, but these aren’t destructive hurricanes—they’re bicycles.
The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, which manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, has a fleet of 30 bicycles named for some of the hurricanes its researchers study.
The blue-and-yellow bikes are available for staff members, students and visiting scientists. Some are checked out for long-term use while others are kept around for short hops to lunch or another research campus.
Boulder-based Community Cycles, which contracts with UCAR to provide the bikes, says it’s looking into studded tires to see if the bikes could be used through the winter.
