Terra-Rye’zd Black Rye Lager by Left Hand Brewing Co. $8.99 per 22-ounce bottle

As All Hallows’ Eve approaches, we take a step into the spooky unknown with this collaboration between Longmont’s Left Hand Brewing and Terrapin Beer Co. of Athens, Ga. Terra-Rye’zd pours an opaque dark brown with a tan two-finger head of rather large bubbles that dissipate into a thin coating that haunts the glass with sticky lacing. The aroma is not as strong as expected but is full of coffee, chocolate and bready notes. This brew is thick for a lager, with the aforementioned flavors mingling with a hefty dose of hops that goes from bitter to clean on the finish. Carbonation is faint, and the weight of this lager gives it a smooth mouthfeel with superior drinkability. Alcohol by volume of 6.6 percent.
