DENVER—New regulations for Colorado’s oil and gas industry likely won’t take effect until April 1 in part because of a state hiring freeze.
State regulators have given preliminary approval to dozens of new rules and expect to take final votes in December.
The state Oil and Gas Conservation Commission gave initial approval Monday to new rules for oil and gas waste pits, including a requirement for liners in many cases.
Commission acting director Dave Neslin has suggested the new regulations take effect April 1 to give the state time to hire and train more staff. A start date of Jan. 1 was originally considered.
Gov. Bill Ritter froze hiring and new construction in September because of the upheaval in the nation’s financial industry.
