The part-time retired Martin signed a 2009 deal to replace Casey Mears in the Rick Hendrick-owned No. 5 Chevrolet, but Martin’s debut with the team could come in this year’s season finale Nov. 16 in Homestead, Fla. Mears has signed a 2009 contract with Richard Childress Racing, and Childress would like to get Mears in one of his cars by the end of the year. That has opened the door for Hendrick and Childress to make a deal. Martin, 49, has started 22 of 33 races for Dale Earnhardt Inc.
