GOLDEN — A Wheat Ridge man has been formally charged in last week’s serious injury of a 2-year-old cat named Sid.

Charges against James Ian Whitlock, 26, include four felonies — aggravated animal cruelty, extortion, menacing and possession of a controlled substance. He also has been charged with criminal mischief and drunken driving.

Whitlock is being held in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. His next court appearance is Nov. 7.

Police said Whitlock was angry with his girlfriend and took out his rage on the cat. He allegedly told his girlfriend that he was going “choke and kill” her cat.

Whitlock told a Wheat Ridge investigator that if there was “an imprint of the cat’s face” in blood on the shower wall, that he was responsible, the arrest affidavit said.

The floor and walls of the bathroom shower were smeared with blood, the investigator said. Sid is recovering.
