Law-enforcement agencies across the state have rounded up 60 sex offenders who either failed to register or are wanted for additional crimes.
In that number are 12 of the 100 most-wanted offenders, including eight for sexual assaults and two for possessing child porn. One of the 100 turned himself in Wednesday.
About 43 were arrested for not registering as a convicted sex offender, which is another felony charge, said Lance Clem of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The majority of the arrests were made in the metro area, but others were made “from one corner of the state to the other,” Clem said.
The “Operation Shepherd” sweep was part of an annual roundup started four years ago by the CBI and which now includes 34 state agencies as well as the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
Officers also conducted 1,300 compliance visits, where they check the addresses that sex offenders have registered. In one case, marshals found two wanted sex offenders living together.
Colorado has 10,380 registered sex offenders and another 701 convicted sex offenders who have failed to register, Clem said.
