COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The El Pomar Foundation is giving an extra $1 million to Colorado nonprofits because the bad economy is straining services.
The Colorado Springs-based foundation, with assets of more than $550 million, is creating a new emergency grant program for organizations that provide direct help of food, housing and clothing.
Pikes Peak-area groups will receive at least $250,000 of the $1 million and Pueblo County groups will receive at least $50,000. The foundation will distribute $50,000 each in nine rural regions and the remaining $250,000 throughout the state.
This is the fourth time in six months that El Pomar has granted money for emergencies. It expects to spend about $25 million this year on programs and grants.
