A man suspected in several carjackings who lead police on a wild chase before taking hostages and then killing himself has been identified.
Stewart Steven Garrett, 39, died early this morning in the southwest Denver apartment where he had barricaded himself, Denver police said.
Police said Garrett entered the apartment at Peachtree Apartments, 3550 S. Kendall St., and held several people hostage. Police freed the last hostage at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Garrett has a long arrest record in Colorado, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records, including a July case involving theft and motor-vehicle theft.
The Denver coroner’s office said Garrett shot himself in the head. It ruled his death a suicide.
