Bye weeks have been very good to the Broncos since the NFL adopted its current scheduling format in 1990.

Playing after a week off, the Broncos are 15-4 in their next game, the best mark in the AFC and second best in the NFL. Playing in Denver after a bye, the Broncos are even better, going 11-2.

But Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is not taking this week lightly. The Miami Dolphins travel to Denver for a Sunday, 2 p.m. game against the Broncos at Invesco Field. The Broncos are 4-3 through Week 8 of the NFL season, after an off weekend gave them their only break of the year.

“I didn’t study them a lot last year, but they are very impressive (this year),” Shanahan said today. “They are playing some great offense, some great defense and they are keeping people off balance on both sides of the ball.”

Miami a year ago won only one game in going 1-15.

The Dolphins last week used four turnovers to score 18 unanswered points in rallying for a 25-16 upset victory over the visiting Buffalo Bills.

“They have (beaten) some good football teams by dominating a couple of those games,” Shanahan said. “So they are very impressive.”

The Broncos have struggled against Miami historically. They are 3-10-1 all-time against the Dolphins, with each victory coming in Denver.
