The Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs issued a statement today that “robo-calls” made by diocesan priest Bill Carmody in support of presidential candidate John McCain’s stance against legal abortion, were made on behalf of a group called Informed Catholic Citizens, and not for the diocese.

“The Diocese of Colorado Springs does not endorse, support or oppose any candidate or political party, and sincerely regrets any misunderstandings that may have resulted from these calls,” the statement said.

Within two hours of finding out about the phone messages from concerned Catholics, the diocese asked the group to stop using them, spokesman Doug Flinn said. Carmody, who for years headed up the diocese’s Respect Life committee, believed he was helping this organization in his personal capacity and not as an official representative of the church, Flinn said.
