Rocky Mountain National Park has reopened Trail Ridge road for as long as the warm snap holds out.
The country’s highest continuous route climbs to more than 12,000 feet above sea level at points along the 48-mile stretch from Estes Park to Grand Lake.
In most years the road has long since closed under deep snow. The road reopens on Memorial Day weekend each year. When the scenic stretch of U.S. 34 closes each year depends on the snow. The road closed on Sept. 9, 2006, but six weeks later, Oct. 23, in 2007.
The road was closed temporarily by a snowstorm earlier this month.
The latest closure was in 1933, when snow stayed away until Dec. 2, according to park information.
An automobile pass for the road, good for seven days, is $20. Pedestrians, bicyclists and motor bike riders pay $10 each. People with a $35 season pass to Rocky Mountain National Park Pass have use of the road whenever it’s open.
