About 3,500 Qwest customers lost phone service Tuesday after BT Construction damaged lines while boring near the intersection of Havana Street and Sixth Avenue.
When Qwest technicians dug a 14-foot-deep, 30-foot- wide hole to assess the damage, they discovered asbestos, said Jennifer Barton, a spokeswoman for the phone company. An asbestos crew was called in to clean up the area before Qwest technicians could start working on repairs.
A number of customers already have had their service restored, and the work should be completed by Sunday.
“We’ve got technicians there around the clock working, and they’ll be there until every last customer has service restored,” Barton said.
