BROOMFIELD, Colo.—Container manufacturer Ball Corp. says it will close plants in Kansas City, Mo., and Guayama, Puerto Rico.

The Kansas City plant employs 180 and is expected to close by the end of March. The Guayama plant has 70 workers and is expected to close by the end of this year.

Ball hasn’t said whether the workers will be offered jobs elsewhere.

The closures were announced Thursday.

Ball expects an after-tax charge of approximately $32 million from the closures, including about $28 million in the fourth quarter of 2008 and the rest in the first quarter of 2009.

Ball says it expects $30 million in cost reductions in 2009.

Ball shares were up $2.90, or 9.4 percent, to $33.78 in morning trading.
