A pedestrian died Wednesday night when he was hit by an SUV as he tried to cross a highway in the dark.

The name of the 43-year-old man Brighton man was not released by police.

Police said that at about 8:30 p.m., the victim tried to cross U.S. 85 near Bromley Lane when he was hit by a Ford Expedition.

Witnesses told investigators the victim tried to cross “a dark section” of the highway and that he “appeared suddenly” in front of the SUV, said John Bradley, a Brighton police spokesman.

The driver of the SUV stopped after hitting the man and cooperated with investigators. Police do not anticipate filing charges or citing the motorist.

The man who was crossing the highway may have been intoxicated, police said.
