DENVER—The Rocky Mountain Showdown between Colorado’s two major universities usually takes place on the football field, but Gov. Bill Ritter wants the rivalry to move to the ballot box.

Ritter is challenging the University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University in Fort Collins to see which school can turn out the most voters by the time polls close Nov. 4.

Ritter encouraged students Thursday to hand-deliver their mail-in ballots. He says that early and mail-in voting in precincts around CU and CSU could be doing better.

Early voting ends Friday.

Ritter attended both schools. He earned his bachelor’s degree from CSU in 1978 and graduated from the CU law school in 1981.
