LOS ANGELES — NASA’s Phoenix Mars lander has failed to respond to wake-up calls from Earth, a sign that it could be near its end.
Waning sunlight and a dust storm drained the lander’s power, forcing it to go into safe mode. It failed to respond to two wake-up calls from Earth but sent a signal late Thursday when the Odyssey spacecraft passed overhead.
Phoenix landed in the Martian arctic in May to collect soil and ice bits for study.
