A van belonging to a Boulder man who suffered amnesia and went missing for 16 days has turned up in California, with the keys in it.
Police in Huntington Park said they found the black, 1998 Town and Country minivan on Oct. 21, the same day that James McPhee, 34, knocked on the door of a Boulder home in the 800 block of 7th Street. McPhee, who wasn’t injured or scratched, was carrying a loaded pistol and bottle of wine. He had no memory of anything.
California police finally linked the van to Boulder through its vehicle identification number on Oct. 24. When they found it, it had California plates that had either been stolen or lost off another car.
McPhee, who’s married with two small children, went missing Oct. 5, after dropping some DVDs off at the library.
His wife and brother held a press conference a few days after he was found, in which they said doctors told them he had suffered dissociative amnesia through an untreated depression. He is being treated for the malady and is expected to make a full recovery, said his wife, Jessica Hersh.
Police have no idea how McPhee obtained a gun, which he didn’t own prior to vanishing, or how his van got out to California. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Boulder PD Det. Aimee LaClaire at (303) 441-3330.
