SAN LUIS, Colo.—The small Centennial School District in southern Colorado is facing midyear layoffs because of budget problems.

School finance consultant Kirk Weber says the San Luis-based district would need $380,000 in cuts to eliminate a budget shortfall and build up its reserves to state-required levels.

School board members said last week they may have to lay off as many as nine staffers by December. It wasn’t clear how many of those might be teachers.

State statistics show the district had 25 teachers and 217 students in 2007.

District administrators say they could save $216,000 with cuts in materials, supplies and conference registration fees.

The school board is expected to vote on the cuts on Nov. 20.
