The good news is that Mike Shanahan, quote unquote, thought the Broncos put out a great effort in Sunday’s loss to Miami.

The bad news is that Mike Shanahan, quote unquote, thought the Broncos put out a great effort in Sunday’s loss to Miami.

They’re trying their hardest and this is as good as they can play? That may be the scariest part of all.

If it were possible to collapse in the AFC West, where a losing record could win the division, that’s what we would be calling the Broncos’ recent string of games. A collapse. A calamity. A tank job.

Where this team goes from here is anyone’s guess. Once again, the Broncos have lost their identity. At least, through three games, when they were averaging 38 points per Sunday, they could hang their hats on their explosive passing game. But these days, their quarterback is producing more big mistakes than big plays.

Now for the most troubling part of all: There’s no reason to think the Broncos’ current malaise is going to end any time soon. There’s no tangible proof that they’re going to get their season back on track. And frankly, with all the injuries they’ve sustained, there’s every reason to think things could get worse.

It’s not what anyone had in mind during training camp, when Mike Shanahan was quoted as saying, “This team will not miss the playoffs.” Back then, optimism was in the air at Dove Valley. And three games into things, Jay Cutler was being mentioned as an MVP candidate.

Today? Today, the only question is what will go wrong tomorrow.
