Colorado’s Amendment 54, which would prohibit unions that represent government workers from contributing to political campaigns, remained too close to call Wednesday evening.

The plan was ahead by about 60,900 votes, 51.5 percent to 48.5 percent, with 91 percent of precincts reporting. About 90,000 votes were left to be counted.

“It would take something very dramatic for us to lose at this point,” said Tom Lucero, chairman of Amendment 54.

A coalition of unions that fought the measure didn’t throw in the towel Wednesday, noting that many votes from liberal-leaning Boulder have yet to be counted.

Amendment 54 would prohibit campaign contributions from any entity that wins no-bid government contracts totaling $100,000 or more. The measure classifies collective-bargaining contracts as no-bid contracts. Andy Vuong
