SANTA ANA, Calif. — A millionaire businessman says he secretly recorded a former Southern California sheriff proposing to launder campaign donations.
Don Haidl said Wednesday during the trial of former Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona that he met him in March 1998 during his first run for the job.
Haidl said Carona and an adviser wanted Haidl to give them $30,000 and proposed that Haidl reimburse donors for $1,000 donations to circumvent campaign contribution limits. Carona has pleaded not guilty to mail fraud, witness tampering and conspiracy.
