Getting your player ready...

My fiance and I are moving in together. He is very contemporary and I am very traditional. Do you have any suggestions on how we can blend our two styles?

Contemporary and traditional styles can be blended together very nicely. But careful consideration must be given to scale, color and space-planning for the room to flow.

Traditional wing chairs can be covered in a transitional fabric such as a small print or geometric. Contemporary artwork can tie together all the colors in the room including very traditional antiques such as side tables or bookcases.

The arrangement of the room also can bring very traditional pieces together in a more contemporary grouping by not crowding the room with the prerequisite sofa facing two chairs. Two comfortable chairs and a lovely baby grand piano, for instance, can fill up the room nicely.

Finally, shutters are a good window covering, being traditional in origin but having a more contemporary flair with wide louvers and a white painted finish.
