QUEBEC CITY — Quebec’s premier, a strong opponent of independence for the French-speaking Canadian province, on Wednesday called a provincial election for next month.

Premier Jean Charest, leader of the federalist Liberal party in Quebec, appealed to Quebecers to trust him to lead the province through tough economic times.

If the Liberals regain power in the election, slated for Dec. 8, it would further squash the possibility of a third referendum on Quebec’s independence from Canada.

Two failed referendums on the issue of separation took place in 1980 and one in 1995. The latter was decided by a narrow 1.2 percent margin.
