Getting your player ready...

IRVING, Texas — Tony Romo was back under center at practice Wednesday, once again zipping passes to Terrell Owens.

Expect him to be doing so the next time the Cowboys play — Nov. 16 at Washington.

Romo’s return from a broken pinkie on his throwing hand is coming along as expected. The clunky cast he wore the last three weeks has been replaced by a small splint covering only the pinkie.

It’s as much for support as protection, and he wasn’t even wearing it between a walkthrough and a practice Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s still not all the way healed, but it’s getting there,” Romo said. “I can definitely grip the ball much better.”

Roethlisberger rests

PITTSBURGH — Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger rested his sore right shoulder, although his latest tests showed no additional damage.

The Steelers might not know until late in the week if he can play Sunday against the Colts.

“It really depends on where (Roethlisberger) is at the end of the week and if he is capable of being Ben,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “If he’s not, we will go with Byron (Leftwich).”

Giants place Tyree on IR

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Giants receiver David Tyree, who made “The Catch” in New York’s Super Bowl victory over the Patriots in February, was placed on injured reserve following offseason knee surgery and then a hamstring injury.

Jaguars send Peterson home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jack Del Rio sent middle linebacker and team captain Mike Peterson home two days after the Jaguars coach questioned his team’s chemistry.

It was unclear what prompted Del Rio’s decision, but there was speculation it could have been because Peterson flexed his muscles following a tackle Sunday with the team trailing 21-3.

Footnotes.

The Seahawks expect quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (knee, back) to return Nov. 16 against the Cardinals.

• Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck (ribs) sat out practice and is day to day.

• Relieved his right ankle is just sprained and not broken, Bears quarterback Kyle Orton said he hopes to play Sunday against the Titans.

• Vikings defensive end Jared Allen said a sprained right shoulder could keep him from playing Sunday against the Packers.

• Texans linebacker Zac Diles, who leads the team in tackles, broke his left leg during practice and will miss the rest of the season. Kevin Bentley will start in his place against Baltimore.

• The Steelers released former University of Colorado punter Mitch Berger and brought back Paul Ernster, who spent most of training camp with the team.

• The Lions tried to be coy about how much Daunte Culpepper practiced, but it appears likely the recently signed quarterback will play Sunday against the Jaguars.

“We’re throwing him in the fire right away,” captain Cory Redding said. “I feel like it’s something he can handle because he’s been in this league long enough. It’s like riding a bike.”
