CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah women’s basketball coach Steve Hodson died Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 53.
Hodson, a former player and assistant coach at Southern Utah, took over the women’s basketball program two years ago after a long and successful high school coaching career.
Southern Utah named assistant Kit Janes as interim coach.
• Florida sophomore guard Jai Lucas, the son of former NBA player and coach John Lucas, has decided to transfer.
Gators coach Billy Donovan said Lucas, who averaged 8.5 points last season and led the Gators in 3-point shooting at 43.5 percent, will remain in school this fall, then enroll elsewhere before the spring semester.
Stars sign Parrish
DALLAS — The Dallas Stars signed right wing Mark Parrish, acquiring a former all-star who played for the Minnesota Wild last season.
Parrish, who signed a one-year contract worth $500,000, played in 66 games with the Wild last season and had 16 goals and 14 assists. Minnesota bought out the final three years of Parrish’s contract in July, making him a salary-cap casualty.
Bucks’ Redd out with injury
MILWAUKEE — Bucks guard Michael Redd missed Milwaukee’s game against the Washington Wizards because of a sprained right ankle.
He is expected to return Friday night at Boston.
Wizards center Etan Thomas missed the game because of a sprained left ankle. Thomas sat out all of last season after open heart surgery.
Alonso to remain with Renault
MADRID, Spain — Fernando Alonso opted to stay with Renault, signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the French Formula One team through 2010.
Renault also said Nelson Piquet Jr. will remain with the team next year, leaving its driver lineup unchanged for the 2009 season.
• The Shanghai Grand Prix was moved to the third race on the 2009 Formula One calendar from near the end of the series. Moving the Shanghai race forward to April 19 means the Bahrain GP has gone back a week to April 26.
U.S., South Korea play to scoreless tie
CINCINNATI — Nicole Barnhart and Briana Scurry each made three saves in the United States’ 0-0 exhibition soccer tie with South Korea that snapped an eight-match winning streak.
The U.S. women’s team’s last loss was a 2-0 defeat to Norway in the opening game of the Beijing Olympics, and the Americans went on to win the gold medal.
Gwynn receives extension
SAN DIEGO — Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn signed a three-year contract to remain the baseball coach at San Diego State, his alma mater.
The former San Diego Padres star is 173-190 in six seasons at San Diego State.
“Now that the contract has been signed, we can move forward and concentrate on our aim of making Aztec baseball a perennial contender both in the Mountain West Conference as well as nationally,” Gwynn said.
