WHITEFISH, Mont.—The Whitefish City Council has selected Charles Stearns as the new city manager.

Mayor Mike Jenson made the announcement Wednesday.

Stearns is a former Whitefish resident and, for the past four years, city administrator in Georgetown, Colo. In Whitefish he replaces Gary Marks, who left this summer to take the city administrator job in Ketchum, Idaho.

Stearns was selected after a national search. A field of 65 applicants was narrowed to six finalists who were in Whitefish Monday for interviews.

Stearns has more than 24 years of municipal experience. He held the top city position in Mount Crested Butte, Colo., for nine years and worked as finance director in Missoula.

He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Montana.

He will start work in Whitefish in December.
