CAMDEN, N.J. — An FBI informant testified Thursday that he talked up an attack on a New Jersey Army installation in order to gain the confidence of one of five men charged in the alleged plot.
Asked by a defense attorney Rocco Cipparone about secret recordings he made for the FBI in which he endorsed attacking Fort Dix, offered to provide weapons and suggested that a plot would need more participants, Mahmoud Omar testified that he said those things in order to gain the trust of one of the alleged plotters, Mohamad Shnewer.
Omar also testified that the five men charged in the case never sat down as a group to review a map of the installation or plans to carry out a plot — testimony that could bolster defense claims that some of the suspects were not even aware of the plot.
