An office manager for the South Jeffco Sports Association pleaded guilty today to forging payroll checks to herself and running up a personal tab on the the nonprofit’s credit card.

Jefferson County prosecutors said Carrie Ann Smith, 44, of Littleton fleeced the association for $102,580 between September 2005 and September 2007.

Smith, who has repaid the money, will be sentenced on the felony theft charge in January. She faces up to six years in prison, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office.

The theft came to light when then-association president Gary Losh spotted a forged signature on a payroll check where the treasurer’s signature had been misspelled.

Losh immediately fired Smith, but a month later, before the criminal investigation was completed, Losh was voted out of the unpaid position.

The nonprofit 2,800-member association works with nearly 4,000 athletes ages 6 to 14.
